Karl-Heinz Schleifer has been full professor and Head of the Department of Microbiology since 1974. He was Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry, Biology and Geology from 1986 till 1988 and President of the German Society for Hygiene and Microbiology from 1989 till 1992 and Secretary General of the Federation of European Microbiological Societies from 1986 till 1994. He is currently President of the International Union of Microbiological Societies. He was a member of the Management Board of the German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures (Braunschweig), a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Max-Planck-Institute of Marine Microbiology (Bremen) and a member of the advisory panel "Biodiversity" of the German Ministry of Education, Research and Technology (BMBF). He is also the European representative (at-large member) on the International Committee of the American Society for Chairman (2002-2005) of the Bacteriology and Applied Microbiology Division of the International Union of Microbiological Societies (IUMS). Since July 2005 he is the President of IUMS.Moreover, he is corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Veterinary Sciences in Madrid (Spain, since 1984) and of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen (since 1987) and full member of the American Academy of Microbiology since 1995.
In 1995 he received the Körber Award for European Scientific Research, in 1997 the annual award of the Society for Hygiene and Environmental Medicine, in 2001 the Ferdinand-Cohn-Medal and in 2009 the Lwoff Award of the Federation of European Microbiological Societies as well as the Bergey Medal. He is currently Executive Editor of Systematics and Applied Microbiology. He was one of the Coeditors of the second edition of "The Prokaryotes" and is coeditor of the new electronic edition of Prokaryotes and of Volume 3 of the second edition of Bergey’s Manul of Systematic Bacteriology. He retired at the end of March 2007 and is since June 2007 TUM Emeritus of Excellence.
Research Activities:
About 480 publications on the chemistry, immunology and biological activity of bacterial cell walls; molecular taxonomy and biochemistry of staphylococci, micrococci, streptococci and lactic acid bacteria; molecular systematics and evolution of bacteria, design and application of gene probes, microbiology of waste water treatment, molecular microbial ecology. Highly cited researcher. Ranked among the top ten microbiologists based on total citations from ISI; best ranking position: world-wide number 3 in 2001. More than 100 PhD- and about 250 master theses were carried out under his guidance and that of his coworkers.
