The French-German NUTRIBRITE project funded by ANR and DFG contributes the transcriptome analysis of human brown and white adipose tissues.
A clinical research team in Turku (Finland) found that brown adipose tissue in humans is acutely activated after a single carbohydrate-rich meal. This increase in metabolic activity induced by food intake, as assessed by tracers for oxygen consumption and fatty acid uptake, is comparable to cold-induced activation. The study demonstrated that post-prandial fatty acid uptake into brown fat was directly correlated with meal-induced thermogenesis in brown fat. In collaboration, our transcriptome analysis of human brown and white fat biopsies revealed the enrichment of pathways involved in lipid metabolism and fatty acid handling in brown fat.
